Featured Obituary:

Delores (“DeeDee”) Chaimson Ehrenreich grew up in the small town of Shawano, WI, where her father, William Chaimson, owned the Chaimson Department Store, a fixture on Shawano's Main Street for over 70 years. DeeDee frequently reminisced about her childhood in Shawano, when she had friendships with classmates from the local Native-American Menominee Tribe, and she and her brother were the only Jewish children at their school. In fact, the Chaimsons were the only Jewish family in town, which only deepened DeeDee’s faith. She proudly made it no secret that she prayed every day, and respected people of all faiths. She even delighted in Christmas, tree and all, as DeeDee never missed an occasion to give or receive gifts.

After high school, DeeDee attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and Shimer College, after which she became a secretary at a Chicago business. Soon thereafter, she met Melvin Ehrenreich, and that small town Wisconsin girl and the Chicago WWII veteran from the South Side embarked on a life together that included a 65-year marriage, two children, five grandchildren, adventurous travels throughout Europe and Asia, and of course, life’s bumps in the road, including DeeDee’s survival of breast cancer in her 60’s.

DeeDee and Mel settled in Highland Park for more than 50 years. Once her children were in school, DeeDee went to work in “the family business” - retail. DeeDee worked for Neiman Marcus at Northbrook Court for over 25 years, and frequently received annual company awards for her sales accomplishments - though Mel would quip that DeeDee’s frequent enjoyment of her employee discount generally resulted in a breakeven proposition on that employment arrangement. No matter how busy at work, DeeDee always managed the house and her family, including her beloved English Springer Spaniels, Samuel and Michael. It would surprise nobody who knew DeeDee and Mel, that Mel knew they owned a washing machine and dryer, but not where they were located.

Wherever she was, if it was football season, DeeDee needed to know the Green Bay Packers score - the team her father cheered for and took her to watch as a youngster. DeeDee eventually warmed up to Mel’s team (the Bears), but it was a given that she would watch both teams play if the TV schedule permitted.

On March 5th, DeeDee, who at 91 showed no major signs of slowing down, enjoyed a lunch outing outdoors on a sunny 70 degree day on the North Shore with her daughter Linda and son-in-law Bob. She then went home, laid down for a rest, and passed peacefully in her sleep within minutes.
