Featured Obituary:

Matthew S. Lassen (Lasinski) 1/1/1926-10/20/2020. Born in Warsaw, Poland, Matthew Lassen, 94, fought with the Polish Underground at 17, when he moved away from his family to protect them. He was captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz and Mauthausen. He survived thru exhibiting needed drafting skills in the camps, and with the kindness and generosity of an artist who shared food with him. A portrait from the artist was one of the few possessions that survived the camps. When Auschwitz was liberated, he continued the fight with a Polish contingent of the British Army in Italy.

Post war, he developed telephone technology in England, and then the US, with companies that eventually evolved into Verizon, and was a holder of several telephone technology patents. While based in Chicago, he met and married Adela Winikaitis in 1951. They had two children, Christine Bertrand and Karen Britten Wecker, and eventually four grandchildren, Eric and Scott Bertrand, and Chelsea and David Britten, plus two great grandchildren, Carter and Theodore Bertrand. Very focused and driven throughout his life, his great passions were real estate and stock investing, which he continued until only recently, as age advanced.

They traveled to nearly every country, collecting treasures from around the world, until the tragedies of 9/11 changed their perspective on the safety of travel.
