Featured obituary:

Eugene Lewandowski, 91, long-time resident of Highland Park, passed away on Wednesday, September 12. Born on April 17, 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, he was a graduate of the Walton School of Commerce, with a Bachelor of Science of Accounting.

He lived in service to his country. A veteran of World War II, he was inducted into the U. S. Army in 1945 at Fort Sheridan Illinois and served with the 42nd Infantry Division in Salzburg, Austria. Upon his honorable discharge from the army in 1947, he continued to serve with the Army Reserve Program for 34 years and rose to the rank of Colonel. Colonel Lewandowski completed the Adjutant General Advance Course, was a graduate of the Command & General Staff College and graduated courses from the U. S. Army Institute of Administration and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

As a member of the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars), Colonel Lewandowski served as Post Commander of the Highland Park Memorial Post, as well as District Commander and Lake County Council Commander. He was also a member of MOC (Military Order of the Cootie of the United States), a non-profit Veterans Service Organization) where he donated countless hours of service to veterans hospitals and was awarded the honor of Cootie of the Year. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the army never left him, as his family and friends will attest.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Catherine Lencioni Lewandowski, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alphonse and Jennie Lewandowski and his brother, Ted Lewandowski.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Sept. 17 at Kelly & Spalding Funeral Home. He will be buried with full military honors at Fort Sheridan Cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory be made to the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center, Community Affairs (135), 3001 Green Bay Road, North Chicago, IL 60064.
