Featured obituary:
Robert “Bob” James Foley, 89, passed from earthly to eternal life on September 18, 2018, after a 10 year valiant battle with Alzheimer's Disease. He was surrounded by his loving family. Bob was the love of his wife's life for 65 years Mary Foley nee Courtney, he was devoted to her. He was the loving father of Pat Foley, Brian Foley, and Kathy (Dennis) O’Keefe. Wonderful “Popper” of Brian, Jr. and Mary Claire Foley, Ryan, Colleen (Bruce Meyer), Sean, Gavin, Dodie and Patrick O’Keefe. He is survived by his brother Rev. John P. Foley, S.J., founder of the Cristo Rey Network of Schools. He was preceded in death by his parents Helen (Purcell) and Robert Martin Foley.

Bob was born on May 9, 1929 in Chicago, and raised in Winnetka and Wilmette. He loved telling that he was in the second graduating class of Saints Faith, Hope, and Charity School in Winnetka as well as a 1947 graduate of Loyola Academy in Chicago. After attending Georgetown University for 2 years, he entered naval aviator training in Pensacola, FL in 1950. There he earned his “wings” and received the commission of Ensign in the Navy.
He married his sweetheart, Mary Courtney, on February 7, 1953 in Washington D.C. The newlyweds drove from Washington D.C. to Coronado, CA where Bob was to report for duty to patrol squadron VP48. After several months in Coronado, Bob’s squadron received orders to patrol the waters around Korea via the Philippines and Japan. While in Korea Pat was born. Bob served two 9-month tours overseas. After the first tour, Bob was awarded the position of patrol plane Captain, which made him the most junior Captain in the Pacific. Bob was honorably discharged from the Navy in August, 1955.
The young family came back to the Chicago area where Bob began working at his father’s Buick dealership (Foley Motor Sales in Wilmette) in business since 1933. In July of 1956 Bob and Mary bought their first home in Glenview, IL. That same month their family grew when Brian was born, followed by Kathy in 1959.
In 1956 they became active parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help which truly became a second home to them. For countless years Bob was a lector and song leader at parish masses. In 1970 he became the President of Foley Motor Sales. Both Bob and his father served 9 years on the Chicago Auto Trade Association (CATA) Board of Directors, his father from 1966-1974 and Bob from 1979-1987. Both served as CATA President (1973 and 1986) and Auto Show Chairman (1974 and 1987). Bob and his father were the first father and son to lead the CATA. Bob also served as the Treasurer of the Metropolitan Chicago Buick Dealers Association from 1955-1995. Foley Motor Sales closed its doors in 1995 after a 63 year run during which it was considered one of the most respected automobile dealerships in the Chicagoland area. A visitation and service will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 1774 Grove St. in Glenview.
