Featured Obituary:
Yvonne Irene Joseph, called Ma, Mummy, Old Lady, Ma Joe, Ma Jojo, Mother Joseph, Gan Gan, Granny & Grammy, was born on the Phillipine Estate in Gran Couva, Trinidad, W.I. to Elizabeth Gertrude Atterton and Benjamin Abinas Jacob on June 13th 1922. The third child of Elizabeth, after elder sisters Melvina Rodney, and Agatha Williams, Yvonne was followed by siblings Leon Atterton, Norma Lewis, Lionel Cameron, Kenrick Cameron, Ulric Cameron, Emmanuel Cameron, and Matthew Cameron, all of whom predeceased her.
As a child and throughout their lives, she was especially close with her eldest sister Melvina, with whom she spent time in the care of their grandmother Ma Bella. In her youth, Yvonne was a congregant of the Tortuga R.C. church community.

Yvonne married Abellto Joseph in April of 1944, and raised their growing family in Couva, first on Southern Main Road before moving to Victoria St. Besides her sister ‘Mena’, she shared her greatest friendship with Neighbor Roberts. In Couva she was a parishioner at St. Paul’s R.C. Church, where her children were baptized and attended parish schools.
In the fall of 1972, Yvonne moved to Brooklyn, NY, where several of her children, led by her daughter Mariana, had come to live. It was in Brooklyn, as a congregant at St. Catherine of Genoa, that she began her Eucharistic ministry. In 1979 she trained and was certified to work as a Home Health Aide by the Visiting Nurse Service of New York.
In 1987, she joined her daughter Lenore and son-in-law Lionel in Evanston, IL, which would be her primary place of residence through the remainder of her life. There, she joined the community of St. Mary’s Parish, where she continued her Eucharistic ministry, sharing communion in church, as well as visiting the sick.
A beloved member of the congregation, Yvonne was a member of several prayer groups and religious societies, including The Legion of Mary in Trinidad, Our Lady of Holy Confraternity, Saint Martin Rosary, Sacred Heart, Young at Heart, and the Charismatic prayer group community at St Mary’s. She also observed daily meditation based on the spiritual exercises of St. Ignatius.
Yvonne enjoyed crocheting, often as a gift of love to her far-flung family, loved gardening, soap operas, game shows, and visiting and keeping up with her family through exchange of phone calls, cards, and letters. She kept running, handwritten ‘spreadsheets’ of birthdays, anniversaries, phone numbers and addresses, and never missed acknowledging a special occasion if she could help it. She was also quick to share with friends and acquaintances the ever-growing numbers of her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and their many accomplishments.
Until late in her life, she attended church daily, walking or taking the bus when the weather accommodated. Until her health prevented it, she never missed Sunday Mass at St. Mary, often officiated by her good friend Father Greg. Throughout her adult life, in any state of her own health, she was a dedicated prayer warrior for family and friends, often fielding phone calls for special focus and intercession in moments great or small, whether major surgeries or school exams.
Among her proudest personal moments were becoming a U.S. Citizen in 1998, casting her first vote, her pilgrimages to sacred sites in Europe, and to the Holy Land, & meeting Archbishop Blase Cupich in 2015.
As an elder embraced by all, and respected woman of faith, Yvonne grew into a fixture in the Haitian and African-American community of Evanston and Chicago, offering grace before meals at family gatherings, community meetings, ecumenical, political & cultural events. This role was a central and lasting part of her personal ministry. She modeled her faith, teaching her descendants to pray, and trust, as she often put it “in the hands of the Good Lord.”
Yvonne’s Husband Abellto And Their First Child Euklin Joseph, Predeceased Her.
