Featured Obituary:

David Leo Long, age 75, died peacefully on September 19th, 2021 in Lake Forest, Illinois.

He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Elizabeth (Lisa) Valk Long; his two children Chris Long (Melissa Armento) and Meredith Long; his sisters Deborah Long Sexton (William Sexton) and Darcy Long; two grandchildren, Connor and Isabella Long; and his niece, Jennifer Long (Marc Moran). He was predeceased by his brother, Jeffrey Long in 2009.

The son of Robert A. and Jean E. Long, David was born on June 17th, 1946, in Milwaukee Wisconsin and was raised in both St. Louis and Chicago.

While he attended college before and after the service, he always insisted that the best education he ever received was in the military. David served in the U.S. Army as a tank commander with the 1st Battalion, 72nd Armor, 2nd Infantry Division. In the winter of 1968, during North Korea’s hijacking of the USS Pueblo, his unit was part of a small force of US troops charged with holding the line against significant enemy mobilization at Korea’s 38th parallel. While diplomatic efforts ultimately resolved the hostilities and freed 83 hostages, David said he had never felt such tension, nor a winter so cold.

David Long’s career included 23 years at Time Incorporated, rising through the ranks and serving in numerous executive roles both in Chicago and New York. With stints at Life and People magazines, most of his years were spent at Sports Illustrated, including as Publisher. Throughout his career, he was known as an exacting boss, but one who developed and mentored countless young talent, who fondly recall his leadership lessons to this day: believe in people more than they believe in themselves; pay them more than they think they are worth; and praise them publicly in front of those who can help their careers.
