Officials Await Final Inspection Results of Theater, Garage

Fire Chief Patrick Tanner shares his insights on the recent closures.

The fire department hopes to obtain the final results of an indpendent inspection of the city-owned and Port Clinton Garage Tuesday, according to Chief Patrick Tanner.

Preliminary findings that were presented to the Highland Park City Council and Tanner during a special Saturday meeting prompted .

"I had no choice but to say to close both facilities," Tanner told Patch. Neither Tanner, nor the council, would release specifics on the findings or identify who the independent inspector is until the final results are compiled.

"The concerns brought to the council started investigations that began last Thursday and are still ongoing," Tanner said.

Although Tanner didn't explicitly name the violations, he did say the preliminary report dealt with emergency lighting, exit signs, the alarm system and the sprinkler system.

And while inspectors will perform additional tests at the garage Tuesday morning, Tanner said there are no "immediate plans" to determine how to repair the theater as its violations are more "involved."

"The garage is the higher priority based on what we thought would open in a more timely fashion." Tanner said, "The theater results were a lot more concerning."
