Residents Favor Open Market for HP Theater Site

Neighborhood impact and land use cited as most important issues for residents.

A survey commissioned by the city of Highland Park with an aim to gage the interests of local individuals regarding the Highland Park Theater property on Central Avenue in downtown Highland Park garnered interesting results.

According to a city news release, the proposal for the Dayan Theater Market was viewed as the most favorable, although 31 percent of the 353 responses indicated concerns regarding the viability of such a market in Highland Park.

The proposal for a mixed-use development was the next most popular, with 36 percent of respondents viewing the possibility as either favorable or highly favorable.

“Overall, survey respondents noted that Neighborhood Impact and Land Use were the most important characteristics of development for the Theater,” according to the news release. “Historic preservation and public parking were ranked as less significant factors that should be considered.”

The city has owned the property since 2009. The theater closed in 2012 and was put on the market two years later.

Over the next month, the City will further consider the proposals along with public feedback and respective financial offers.
