State Rep. Scott Drury Calls On Adam Stolberg To Drop Out Of Council Race

Rep. Drury also asks public officials to withdraw their endorsements of Stolberg.

HIGHWOOD, IL – Stunned by the revelation that Adam Stolberg, a candidate for Highland Park City Council provided false information about his academic background, State Representative Scott Drury (D, IL-58) called Monday on Stolberg to drop out of the race and asked any public officials who have endorsed him to withdraw those endorsements.

“Providing false information in order to get elected is intolerable and disqualifying,” said Drury, an Illinois state representative and former federal prosecutor. “It is not too much to demand that those seeking public office tell the truth.”

Stolberg is seeking to fill the City Council seat formerly held by Paul Frank before Frank won a spot on the Lake County Board.

Over the weekend, Patch reported that Stolberg falsely represented in campaign materials that he has an undergraduate degree in economics from the University of Illinois when, in fact, his degree is in “agricultural economics” from the university’s agricultural college.

According to Patch, Stolberg does not deny the falsehood but claims the degrees are essentially the same. Drury contends that Stolberg’s explanation defies common sense.

“If the degrees are the same, why not accurately state your degree,” questioned Drury. “Clearly, Stolberg thought that he benefitted by concealing the fact that he has an agricultural degree.”

Drury decided to go public with his views only after public officials who previously endorsed Stolberg remained silent or tried to downplay the falsehood. According to Drury, this is an issue of honest government and integrity.

Drury is confident that anyone looking at this issue objectively understands the importance of calling out Stolberg’s conduct, as well as the conduct of those who are condoning Stolberg’s actions by their silence.

To date, Drury has not endorsed anyone in the race to fill Frank’s seat but said that likely will change. In Drury’s view, now that he has taken a position on who should be disqualified from the race, he believes it appropriate to let the public know who he believes can restore the public’s trust in this election and Highland Park government.
