Thanksgiving 2017: What's Open, Closed In Highland Park

Find out mall and grocery store opening hours, trash pickup schedule and what businesses will be closed for Thursday's holiday.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — This Thanksgiving and Black Friday promise to be some of the busiest travel days this year. Whether you're in town for a visit or a longtime resident, it's helpful to know which places are extending hours like never before, and which are taking a step back to enjoy "turkey day" apart from the retail frenzy. Here's a list of public services, institutions, retailers and restaurant hours for Thanksgiving 2017.

Post Office: Post offices are closed on Thanksgiving but will resume operations on Friday.

City Hall: City Hall and administrative offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 23, and Friday, Nov. 24.

Public Libraries: The Highland Park Library will close at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22. It will be closed all day on Thanksgiving.

Garbage Collection: Refuse will be collected one day late due to the holiday. Friday service will be collected Saturday.

Banks: Most major banks are closed on Thanksgiving Day, and most will open on Friday. Call your branch to verify.

Schools: North Shore School District 112 and Township High School District 113 schools will be closed Nov. 22 -24.

Parking: In order to encourage local holiday shopping and dining, the Highland Park has temporarily extended parking hours in downtown public parking lots through Dec. 23. Extended parking hours only pertain to public parking lots, other restrictions will remain in place.

Facilities: Centennial Ice Area will have a public skate from 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. Deer Creek Raquet Club will open 8 a.m. - noon, without classes or permanent court time. The Highland Park Country Club will be open from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. on Nov. 23-24. The West Ridge Center will be closed until Nov. 27. The Heller Nature Center building will be closed Thursday, Nov. 23 and Friday, Nov. 24 but the grounds will remain open from dawn to dusk both days. On Thanksgiving at the Highland Park Rec Center, the building will be open 5 a.m. to noon, the pool open 5:15 a.m. - 11:30 a.m., the Kid Fit Hours extend from 8 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Find more from the center's complete activity schedule.

Retailers: A couple of blogs dedicated to Black Friday deals say 72 retailers will be closed on Thanksgiving Day. Outlets that say they've tentatively taken the holiday off include: Abt Electronics, Ace Hardware, Barnes & Noble, Costco, Home Depot, Neiman Marcus, Marshalls, Nordstrom and T.J. Maxx. National retailers that are expected to open on Thanksgiving include Best Buy, Kohl's, Macy's, Sears, Walgreens and Walmart. Target says it will close at midnight on Thanksgiving, then reopen at 6 a.m. Black Friday morning.

Deerfield Towne Center will be closed Nov. 23, and open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Black Friday, but individual stores could vary so you may want to contact a specific store directly. Northbrook Court's holiday hours run from 6 p.m. to midnight on Thanksgiving and from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Black Friday.

Westfield Old Orchard Shopping Center's Thanksgiving hours also run 6 p.m. to midnight. On Black Friday it is scheduled to open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. And Lincolnwood Town Center will be open from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. and again from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thanksgiving and Black Friday.

  • Aldi: Closed
  • Anton's Fruit Ranch, 8 a.m. - Noon
  • Binny's, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Heinen's: Closed
  • Jewel-Osco, Route 41 and Deerfield, 6 a.m. - 6 p.m.(Pharmacy Closed)
  • Mariano's, 6 a.m. - 3 p.m. (Pharmacy closed.)
  • Trader Joe's: Closed.
  • Sunset Foods, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m.
  • Whole Foods Markets, 8 a.m. - 3 p.m.

North Shore Turkey Trot: Burn some calories before packing them on during Thankgiving dinner, as the North Shore Turkey Trot is headed back to Highland Park. Participants are invited to run through the neighborhood while sporting a premium goodie bag and supporting Love For Landon.
