Moraine Township Offers Health Care Open Enrollment Help
Reduced by 45 days, this year's open enrollment period has been cut in half. Help is available in Highland Park and Highwood.

HIGHLAND PARK, IL — Moraine Township will once again offer assistance to residents to enroll for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act. Open Enrollment begins Nov. 1 and ends Dec. 15. Trained and Certified counselors are available to work one-on-one with residents to help them understand their options, balance their medical needs and budgets, compare coverage and costs, and help ensure that enrollees receive the premium subsidies and cost-sharing reductions they may be income-qualified to receive.
In prior years residents have had 90 days for open enrollment, extending into January of the next year. This year open enrollment ends Dec. 15.
“We are concerned that many participants in the Health Insurance Marketplace will not be aware of this abbreviated open enrollment period and will miss out of health insurance for all of 2018 if they are not enrolled by December 15,” notes 5-year Certified Application Counselor volunteer Barbara Altman.

Residents who are currently enrolled in health insurance plans through the Marketplace have two options. They can:
- Re-enroll in their existing plan for another year;
- Select a different plan for 2018
Enrollees may find it beneficial to learn about changes that may have taken place in their existing plan, or review details and compare costs of alternative plans.

If President Donald Trump succeeds in shutting down a major Obamacare subsidy, it would have the unintended consequence of making basic health insurance available to more people for free, and making upper-tier plans more affordable.
