HIGHLAND PARK, IL — City officials announced plans for a candlelight vigil at Highland Park City Hall in solidarity with Ukraine as the Russian invasion of the country enters its third week.

The gathering is set to include a moment of silence, as well as a reading of an English translation of the national anthem of Ukraine, which will also be sung by members of the Highland Park's Ukrainian community as its flag is raised, according to city staff.

“As we watch the crisis in Ukraine continue to unfold, so many in our community are feeling a helpless urgency to reach out to our Ukrainian friends and neighbors," Mayor Nancy Rotering said in a statement announcing the event.

City officials encouraged residents who want to support Ukraine to consider giving money to "established organizations that are working to support refugees of this crisis." And staff have illuminated City Hall in the blue and yellow colors of the flag of Ukraine.
