Miramar, 301 Waukegan Ave., Highwood

The 270-seat French bistro with elements of Cuban style aims to evoke a pre-revolutionary feel. For nearly 18 years, it has been a reliable spot for fine dining on the North Shore, according to readers.

"We've celebrated many occasions at Miramar, birthdays, Christmas, anniversaries," one reader said. "It is a go-to for a special meal, always consistently excellent!"

Disotto, 310 Green Bay Road, Highwood

The rustic Italian cuisine of Disotto was also popular among Highland Park Patch readers seeking a romantic meal. The Highwood eatery is owned by Chef Scott Harris, creator of Francesca's Restaurants and Davonti Enoteca.

"I went here for my birthday and it was memorable," said one reader, who recommended ordering the mussels, "because they make them so good here."
