Doug Bennett Wins 10th District Republican Congressional Primary

The vice-chair of the West Deerfield Township Republicans defeated two well-funded opponents in the 10th District GOP congressional primary.

Doug Bennett, a computer consultant and mathematician who has been active in local politics since he was a congressional intern in the 1970s, narrowly defeated two other Republicans to earn the Republican nomination in the 10th Congressional District. The Deerfield resident edged out a former director with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and Republican Jewish Coalition, Jeremy Wynes of Highland Park, and Libertyville doctor, lawyer and businessman Sapan Shah. Bennett will face off against Democratic Congressman Brad Schneider in November.

Bennett said winning the nomination was a great honor and thanked his opponents for their campaigns. He said his six-month grassroots campaign focused on cutting taxes, encouraging growth in the economy, stopping runaway college costs and reforming the immigration system.

"We need a strong leader willing to get things done for our district. For far too long we have been let down by those that represent us in Washington," he said. "I am excited for the journey ahead, together we can take back our district and get things done for Illinois families."

The 10th Congressional District includes much of northern Cook and eastern Lake counties. After spending three decades as a solidly Republican seat, the district has alternated between voting for Democratic and Republican candidates since the 2010 census.

“I want to congratulate Doug Bennett on winning yesterday’s primary. He has my full support in the general election," Wynes said in a statement Wednesday. "It’s time for the Party to unite behind Doug and work together to defeat Brad Schneider in November.”
