2 Social Media Scams On Hinsdale Residents: Cops

One resident spent $1,400 on gift cards to buy a used car, police said.

HINSDALE, IL – Two Hinsdale residents told police they were victims of social media scams in the last few days. Here is information from the reports:

  • A resident in the 100 block of Maumell Street responded to a social media listing for a used car for sale. The resident bought $1,400 in gift cards and provided the supposed seller with the numbers. The resident discovered the scam after the suspect requested more money for shipping insurance. The case is pending. Virtually any transaction requiring payment in gift cards is a scam.
  • A resident in the 100 block of Symonds Drive on Thursday bought two gold chains from a suspect who listed them on social media. The victim discovered the chains were fake gold after paying the suspect $1,000. The case is pending.
