Hinsdale Crash Sparks All-Way Stop Proposal

Now, it's a two-way stop. The street with the signs, though, has far more traffic, the village said.

HINSDALE, IL – A recent crash at a Hinsdale intersection is prompting a village proposal to make it a four-way stop.

The intersection is at Ayres Avenue and Lincoln Street. Now, just Lincoln has stop signs.

In a memo last week, Deputy Police Chief Thomas Lillie said the current arrangement is "misaligned" with traffic patterns.

The daily traffic on Lincoln is about five times that of Ayres, Lillie said.

Typically, he said, the road with more traffic should be designated as the through street, requiring drivers on the other street to yield.

"Historical review indicates these right-of-way conditions have existed since the 1960s, yet no previous studies exist to explain the current conditions," Lillie said.

A four-way stop is the most effective solution, he said.

Lillie said the recommendation is similar to the one for The Lane and Oak Street a few years ago. Since the village installed stop signs there, no crashes have occurred, he said.

The village is also considering replacing the yield signs on Oak Street at First Street with stop signs.

The Village Board plans to review the proposals at its meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Village Hall.
