Blue Cross Blue Shield will stop selling Individual Healthcare On Aug 30 to gear up for ObamaCare.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) is making some changes to their sales efforts through the end of the year that will have an immediate effect on the Public's access to individual products.  BCBSIL will need to begin selling only new products that are compliant with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) benefit requirements on Oct 1, 2013 ― the first day of enrollment in the new products compliant with 2014 market reforms. However these plans will only go into effect on Jan 1, 2014.

This means they will  temporarily stop selling major medical products on Aug. 30, 2013, with the latest policy effective date of Sept. 28, 2013.

  • Applications for a 2013 policy must be received in house by end of day (11:59 PM.) on Aug. 30.
  • In order to have coverage for a 2013 policy year, the latest policy effective date that can be requested is Sept. 28. If a customer requests an effective date after Sept. 28, they will need to change to a Sept. 28 or earlier date in order to have coverage under an existing product through the end of the year (Dec. 31).
  • As temporary policies are not effected by ACA, our SelecTemp short term / temporary policy will continue to be available for coverage periods of 1 to 11 months.  Processing of these policies will not change.
  • Your non-grandfathered (NGF) plans will be offered the opportunity to migrate to a Qualified Health Plan, or reapply between Oct. 1 to Dec. 15 for coverage effective Jan. 1. All BCBSIL NGF policyholders must have an ACA compliant plan on January 1, 2014.

Please contact a licensed BCBS agent to discuss your options.
