Gardening: Plants and Flowers Toxic for Pets
While planting your garden this Spring, keep in mind which plants and flowers might be toxic for dogs and cats. Here is a short list of the most common toxic plants and symptoms to look out for.
Understanding what garden plants are toxic for pets is important for people to know while planting their gardens this spring. I hear so many stories about dogs digging up or burying things in gardens. Planting a toxic plant or flower could be hazardous to your pets health and result in high vet bill or worse case, death. We wanted to put together a list of the most common plants and flowers that are toxic to pets. You don’t have to avoid these, just plant them in an area your pet can’t get to and also understand the signs and symptoms to look out for. If you suspect your dog might have gotten into something bad, give your vet a call! Our list is by no means complete, but does go over some of the more common plants and some of the warning signs.
Toxic Plants and Flowers for Dog and Cats
- Lilies: severe kidney damage in cats
- Tulip bulbs: seizures, cardiac arrest
- Azaleas/Rhododendrons: vomiting, drooling, diarrhea
- Chrysanthemums: vomiting, drooling, loss of coordination
- English Ivy: vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain
- Aloe Vera: vomiting, diarrhea, tremors
- Daffodils: vomiting, drooling, low blood pressure
- Gladiolas: vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea
- Hostas: depression, vomiting, diarrhea
- Morning Glory: hallucinations, tremors, vomiting
- Garlic and Onion Plants: Cause severe anemia (very toxic for dogs and cats)
- Tomato Plants: diarrhea, drowsiness, confusion, slowed heart rate
Also, be sure to keep your pets out of common outdoor household items like fertilizers, rat (pest) poisons, antifreeze and pool chemicals like chlorine. Things like antifreeze are especially dangerous because they have such a sweet taste, your pet could be attracted to it!
