Is Grain Free Dog or Cat Food Necessary?
We have so many people ask if grain free pet food is necessary. It actually depends. Read our blog to find out more.

We have so many people ask us “why grain free dog and cat food?” Have you ever seen a dog grazing in a wheat field or chewing on a corn husk? If not, you’re not alone. Grains are not a natural part of a dog’s diet. So why are there so many grains in cheap dog and cat foods? It’s because they are much cheaper to buy than quality proteins. But, if you feed a dry kibble to your dog, a starch is necessary to hold the components together. It doesn’t have to be a grain, and if it is, the type of grain can make all the difference. Some of the more common grains out there are corn, white or sweet potatoes, barley, oats, and brown or white rice.
GRAIN FOOD #1: Lamb, lamb meal, oatmeal, barley, turkey meal, peas
Oatmeal is gluten free and peas are a great source of fiber. Barley is low on the glycemic index, which helps support more stable blood sugar.

Sweet potatoes are full of fiber and vitamins and minerals. White potatoes act as a binder, but can be higher on the glycemic index, but pea flour can help support stable blood sugar.

Dogs that have a sensitive stomach can do really well on foods with grains because they aren’t going to be as rich as their grain free counterparts. On the other hand, foods without grains could help fix allergy issues as a lot of grains (such as corn or soybean) are very common allergens. Another reason to go grain free is because grains are not a part of a dogs natural diet and are oftentimes used as unnecessary fillers or to boost protein percentages (as can be the case with corn).
