What's Really In Your Dog's Food?

Understanding what you are actually feeding your dog or cat is crucial to their health or well being. We want to help break it down for you so can keep your pet happy and healthy!

Here at The Modern Dog, we are starting a blog, aimed at providing you with useful information to use when caring for your precious dogs. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to stop by the shop and talk to us! First up, a series about dog food and how to choose the right one for your dog.

Have you ever looked at what you’re actually feeding your dog? Just because the front of the bag says one thing, doesn’t always mean that it’s accurate. It’s very important, regardless of the food that you choose, that you turn the bag around and look at the ingredient list. The first FIVE ingredients will give you a better picture at what is going on.  Since the ingredients are listed in order of weight, the first five are going to make up the largest percentage of what the food is made of.

As you can clearly see, these two foods are vastly different. Food #1 is a protein forward food, with the highest percentage of its ingredients made up of meat. Food #2 is a carbohydrate forward food, with the highest percentage of its ingredients coming from grains. Since every dog is different, and with some dogs developing allergies or sensitivities, it’s important to be aware and know what you are feeding your dog.

Next week, we break down the different grains and what distinguishes a good grain/startch source from a not so good one!
