The Clarendon Hills Fire Department was called around 5:30 p.m. to the two-story, 16-unit apartment complex blaze. Twenty-four Clarendon Hills firefighters responded to the fire, along with a Hinsdale engine and several other area departments.

A plumber told firefighters there was fire in the walls and possibly in the attic because of plumbing work in the building, the fire department reported. The cause of the fire was determined to be a plumber sweating copper pipes in the ceiling of a first floor unit.

The fire was under control after about an hour and a half, with most of the flames contained to the attic area and six units, the fire department reported. The damage is estimated to be more than $1 million.

The building was deemed uninhabitable. Most of the residents took their valuables and went to stay with family. The Red Cross helped about four to six families with living arrangements, the fire department reported.
