Clarendon Hills Middle School (CHMS) Media Resource Center Director Sally Duffy is collaborating with her CHMS colleagues in coordinating the second year of the “Million Words” activity. In the 2012-13 school year, Duffy adopted the reading-focused program that was used at another school district. “A Million Words” is a school-wide effort that challenges students, staff, families and neighbors to read one million words in a three-month period. After reading a book, users enter the book in an online system, which also provides word counts for many titles. Dozens met the challenge individually and as teams in 2012-13, including 68 students. Duffy is hoping even more students, staff and teams will meet the challenge this year.
