District 181 Students Collect Oatmeal for Tanzania School

Several schools in District 181 recently held a collection of oatmeal to benefit the O’Brien School for the Maasai, located in Tanzania, Africa. Kellie O’Brien, president and founder of the school, is a parent of District 181 graduates. She owns English Gardens, Ltd. in Hinsdale and is also a Hinsdale resident.

O’Brien notes that one ten-pound box of Costco Quaker Oats feeds 110 children. Three boxes can feed the entire school for one day. 550 boxes will supply a full year of breakfasts. O’Brien says that if they happen to get more oatmeal than is needed for the school, they are also helping to care for 110 widows and their children in the local village. “It is an amazing what this community is doing to help a Maasai Village in Tanzania,” she says. “The people in our village have never heard of people who feed children and families and yet have never seen their faces. They are all praying for all those who have such generous hearts.”

Oatmeal donations can be accepted through Monday, October 21 by 12:00 p.m. Donations to support shipping costs and other needs are welcomed. Information about the O’Brien family and the Masaai school is available online at www.obrienschool.com.
