District 86 Might Delay Dismissal Thursday if Weather Warning is Issued

If a warning is issued, schools would follow a shelter-in-place directive.

Hinsdale Township High School District 86 might delay or change school dismissal Thursday if the immediate area is issued a weather warning around dismissal time, according to an email sent to district families from superintendent Bruce Law.

If a warning is issued, schools would follow a shelter-in-place directive, meaning students would not be allowed to leave buildings until notice is given. Students and staff would possibly move to designated areas as they’ve practiced in tornado drills, Law wrote.

The district would contact the bus company, and dismissal and transportation wouldn’t take place until after the shelter-in-place is lifted.

The district’s email system has proved unreliable in previous “quick-moving situations,” Law wrote, so the district will update its website and its Twitter if there is a change in school dismissal, and automated phone calls would be used.

“We are actively working to improve communications for issues like this with an app that will provide timely notification,” he wrote, but for now the district is relying on its website, Twitter, and the “robocalls,” as some parents call them.

If no weather warning is in effect at dismissal time, dismissal will take place normally.
