Gated Hinsdale Subdivision Proposed

Some officials say a gated neighborhood is inconsistent with the village's development.

HINSDALE, IL – A developer is asking Hinsdale for permission to build a gated neighborhood in the northwestern part of the village.

On Tuesday, the Village Board plans to review the plan for a second time.

The eight-home subdivision is proposed as part of the property that includes Kensington School on Ogden Avenue. The houses would be on Kensington Court, which is connected to Monroe Street. The developer is requesting the street be made private.

During a meeting earlier this month, Village President Tom Cauley said he favored the project because it is an unusual property that has been vacant for two decades.

Officials said the project would be code-compliant and less dense than other potential uses.

At the meeting, Julie Laux, owner of J. Jordan Homes, said the subdivision would be geared toward older people who want maintenance-free homes with added security, according to meeting minutes.

However, village trustees said a gated community is inconsistent with the village's development.

Laux said the development would not be feasible and could not be marketed without the private gated street.

J. Jordan Homes representatives said the neighborhood would be near the commercial development on Ogden.

The Hinsdale-based developer indicated the homes would cost over $2 million each.

According to the agenda for Tuesday's meeting, the board will either vote on the gated subdivision or send the matter to the Plan Commission for further review.
