Gift Card Scams, Thefts: Hinsdale Cops

Two residents were asked to buy gift cards, according to police reports.

HINSDALE, IL – In the last few days, Hinsdale police handled cases involving scams, thefts, drug possession, fireworks damage and a DUI. Here is information from the latest Hinsdale police reports:

Scams

  • A resident in the 200 block of Racquet Club Court told police Friday that a stranger gained remote access to the resident's computer. The resident was instructed to buy $950 in gift cards.
  • A resident in the 300 block of South Grant Street told police Friday that someone posing as tech support instructed the resident to buy gift cards to fix technical issues. The resident recognized it was a scam after buying the cards and providing the suspect with the card information.
  • A resident in the 1400 block of Burr Oak Road told police June 28 that she was told by phone she had won a sweepstakes. She was asked to mail a check to the suspect to cover processing fees. She was able to cancel it before it was cashed.

Thefts

  • A patient at the Hinsdale hospital, 120 N. Oak St., told police Monday that headphones valued at $200 were stolen from his bag. The case is pending.
  • A woman told police her wedding ring was missing after she was taken by ambulance to the Hinsdale hospital, 120 N. Oak St. The theft happened between June 17 and June 19. She reported it 13 days later.

Drug possession

  • A driver was stopped for speeding about 11:30 p.m. June 26 in the 300 block of West Ogden Avenue. The driver had plastic baggies containing a suspected controlled substance. Charges are pending the results of lab testing.

Fireworks damage

  • On Friday, someone placed a suspected firework in the garbage can inside the men's restroom at Veeck Park, 701 E. Chicago Ave.
  • Police received a fireworks complaint about midnight Tuesday at Burns Field, 320 N. Vine St. Officers discovered a damaged garbage can.

Warrant

  • Dominique Terrell, 31, of La Grange, was arrested Friday on a DuPage County Sheriff's Office warrant. She turned herself in to the Hinsdale police station. She was taken to the DuPage County Jail.

DUI

  • Sandra A. Garcia, 49, of Berwyn, was arrested about 9:30 p.m. June 28 in the 700 block of West Ogden Avenue on charges of DUI, improper lane use, expired registration and no valid driver's license. She refused testing to determine her blood-alcohol content. She was released and given a date to appear in court.
