Hinsdale D86 Conducts Canine Searches to Promote Drug-Free Learning Environment
A shelter-in-place directive was implemented during search.

Submitted by Hinsdale Township High School District 86.
Hinsdale Township High School District 86 announced that Dec. 9 it, along with the Darien and Hinsdale Police Departments and in partnership with local jurisdictions, simultaneously conducted a canine search at both Hinsdale Central and Hinsdale South High Schools. This search is part of a concerted effort to maintain a safe, drug-free environment in District schools.
Students and staff were informed over the public address system that the school would immediately follow a shelter-in-place directive. As a result, no one was allowed in or out of classrooms or offices. People attempting to enter the building were held in the foyer. Teachers and staff members conducted classes and activities normally while the search was underway.

All lockers—regular, athletic and PE—along with classrooms were searched. The process took approximately 30 minutes. After its conclusion, staff and students resumed their regular activities in the building and students moved on to their next class.
This procedure was a collaboration between area law enforcement and District 86 Administration. The dogs, which are specially trained for this type of search, were kept away from direct contact with students and staff at all times.
