HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale High School District 86's acting superintendent is getting a hefty pay hike for added duties in his final days at the helm.

On Wednesday, the board voted unanimously to give Chris Covino, assistant superintendent for academics, a 42 percent raise for the 34 days he is serving as acting superintendent. Board member Terri Walker was absent.

Covino's last day is June 30, when he takes the superintendent's job in La Grange School District 102. He is acting in the place of Superintendent Tammy Prentiss, whom the board suspended May 16.

Covino's increase works out to about $300 a day. That's in addition to the roughly $700 he makes daily as assistant superintendent.

His salary as assistant superintendent is $184,140. With his new pay, he would make $261,000 annually, less than Prentiss' $277,471.

In La Grange District 102, Covino is set to make $225,000.

The District 86 board has not revealed its choice for acting superintendent if Prentiss remains on leave after Covino goes.

Friday marks a month since Prentiss was suspended. During that time, she has received about $23,000 for not working.
