HINSDALE, IL – The owner of a large older house in Hinsdale is seeking to tear it down and build anew.

This is part of a pattern of demolitions of older houses, a trend that worries Hinsdale officials. They want to keep the historical character of older neighborhoods.

Clarendon Hills-based Michael Abraham Architecture has filed a request for the demolition of the 2½-story house at 425 E. Eighth St.

The firm is seeking a "Certificate of Appropriateness" to demolish the 8,700-square-foot structure, which contains eight bedrooms and 6½ bathrooms.

Built in 1937, the house is in the Robbins Park Historic District. The builder is Hinsdale-based J. Jordan Homes.

The replacement house would be code-compliant, according to the village. It would be two stories constructed of stucco, with a four-car attached garage, a pool, several covered porches and stucco wing walls.

Last year, the Hinsdale Village Board enacted new incentives for owners of historic homes to preserve them, rather than choose demolition.

On Wednesday, the village's Historic Preservation Commission is set to consider the request for a certificate to demolish the house.
