HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale officials are "very aware" of the increase in crime and taking steps to address it, an official said last week.

Village President Tom Cauley was apparently responding to a rash of break-ins at local businesses.

"We have the good fortune of having an outstanding and accomplished police chief in Brian King," Cauley said at a Village Board meeting. "We have an excellent police department that is well-equipped and well-funded."

He lamented that much of local police officers' good work was not publicized, particularly the crimes they prevent.

"There are many occasions where the police department has been made aware of a potential crime, a suspicious activity in the village, and they have taken action to prevent a crime before it happens. You never read about that. You don't hear about that, but I can tell you that happens on many, many occasions. Those instances never make their way into the newspapers or on social media."

Nationally, crime rates have increased since 2020, but have yet to reach the levels of the early 1990s.

Even before 2020, many believed crime was the worst it had ever been. Yet FBI figures showed a significant decline over three decades – a largely unheralded trend.
