Driver Dies in Fiery I-55 Collision with Semi Friday Afternoon

A car burst into flames on Interstate 55 northbound near Burr Ridge after hitting a semi-tractor trailer Friday afternoon. A 51-year-old man driving a Hyundai rear-ended the truck at about 3:35 p.m.

Illinois State Police identified the driver as Jeffrey M. Carioto of Burr Ridge. Police said his car hit the semi near County Line Road. He was entrapped and died.

For several hours, traffic was backed up for miles on I-55, stretching past the I-355 interchange.
