Memorial Day: What's Open, Closed In Hinsdale, Clarendon Hills

HINSDALE-CLARENDON HILLS, IL — Memorial Day is America's day to honor servicemen and women who have given their lives for their country. For many, it's also the unofficial start of summer — but since it's a national holiday, it's important to keep in mind that schools and government offices will be closed on that day.

Here's a roundup of what's closed and what will be open on Monday, May 28, and a glance at some local Memorial Day events.

Closed

• Village of Hinsdale, Village of Clarendon Hills offices
• Hinsdale Public Library
• Clarendon Hills Library
• Banks/financial institutions
• Post offices
• Republic Services: Service will run one day behind throughout the holiday week, beginning with services scheduled for the holiday.

Open

Most businesses will be open, but it's not a bad idea to call ahead before heading out to a restaurant or shop. Some businesses will be offering discounts to veterans or active-duty military, so if you've served, bring your military ID with you.

Happening Memorial Day/Memorial Day weekend

• Hinsdale Memorial Day Parade: The parade is sponsored by the Hinsdale American Legion Post and will kick off at 10 a.m. on Memorial Day.
• Darien Memorial Day Events: Two Memorial Day events will take place around Darien.

Also good to know:

• Kids Ride Free on Metra All Summer Long: Up to three children age 11 and under will be able to ride free with each adult starting this Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
