On the first day of school, the staff of Monroe School took advantage of the extra-long full day of school (which traditionally had been an early dismissal day) to help students learn behavior expectations for the year. The program began with a kick-off assembly led by Principal Justin Horne and the Monroe Manners team, which includes staff members Theresa McGee, Lori Andreoni, Maureen Miks, Karen Schuppert, Jenny Petruzzi, Ananda Leinartas and Ashley Miller. Students moved through stations by grade level, with each station focusing on a different part of the day, such as eating lunch, walking in the halls and using the restrooms.
The Monroe Manners Committee was formed last year to develop a school-wide behavior system. The committee met weekly since the beginning of last school year as well as multiple times through the summer to create a program that is responsive to the uniqueness of Monroe School. Leinartas, a Social Worker at Monroe notes, “We have received great support for the development and delivery of this program. We are very proud of the product of our hard work and collaboration.”
When asked about the success of the team’s work, Leinartas says, "The Monroe Manners program has increased our sense of school community as we all work toward the same goal of creating a positive learning environment."
