No Fooling: Hinsdale Hit Milestone April 1

A congressman says the village was ahead of its time in the late 1800s.

HINSDALE, IL – Hinsdale passed an important milestone April 1 – its 150th anniversary.

At Tuesday's Village Board meeting, Village President Tom Cauley read a resolution in honor of Hinsdale's sesquicentennial. And he recognized dignitaries in attendance.

"I never expected this kind of turnout," Cauley said. "Usually, it's just us up here on the dais in this room."

Probably the most high-profile official was U.S. Rep. Jesus "Chuy" Garcia, a Chicago Democrat whose district includes Hinsdale. He called Hinsdale a pillar of Cook and DuPage counties.

"It was thanks to Hinsdaleans that the village undertook numerous civic improvements that were ahead of their time," said Garcia, who has run for Chicago mayor twice. "In the 1890s, civic projects such as a water pumping station, a sewage system, electric streetlights, street paving and sidewalks contributed to the village's appeal."

He said he submitted a statement honoring Hinsdale for the congressional record.
