Rock Legend Jim Peterik Brings Down the House at Birchapalooza

Berwyn native Jim Peterik may be best known as the creative and musical talent behind classic rock hits like “Vehicle” and “Eye of the Tiger,” but it’s a different musical endeavor that’s got him inspired this holiday season: Birchapalooza.

A reference to the iconic annual rock festival Lollapalooza, Peterik coined the term Birchapalooza to refer to his annual holiday musical extravaganza at The Birches Assisted Living. Peterik first started performing at The Birches five years ago when his mother-in-law Esther Moulik moved there, and he has enjoyed performing there every year since. “It’s always so much fun to play at The Birches,” said Peterik. “They’re a great audience.”

Peterik usually performs a 45 minute set, alternating between acoustic guitar and piano. He is accompanied by Doug McCabe on bass and sound man Toby Bermann. In his set, Peterik combines Christmas favorites with original songs, and, of course, his popular hits.

Peterik says his favorite part about playing at The Birches is seeing the smiles on the audience members’ faces. “They listen and they really appreciate it— that’s what means the most to me,” said Peterik. “Everybody’s just singing along and going crazy— it’s really fun.”

Peterik and his wife Karen are grateful they found a warm, caring assisted living community like The Birches for Karen’s mother Esther. Every Sunday when they visit The Birches, they are impressed by the positive environment, friendly Birches associates, and contented residents. “[Esther] loves it there and we’re so glad we found The Birches,” said Peterik.

Peterik, a member of famous classic rock bands like The Ides of March and Survivor, is always glad to give back to the Chicagoland community and share the gift of music. He is especially happy to spread the joy of music to The Birches community every year at Christmas time through Birchapalooza.

“The Birches is one of our favorite places,” said Peterik. “I welcome families of the residents to come out. Let’s pack the place and make it the best [Birchapalooza] yet!”

This year’s Birchapalooza will take place December 17th at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Dining Room.
