The sedum family of plants is everything a gardener wants. They have beautiful foliage in a variety of colors to keep interest going all season long. They are drought tolerant and low maintenance. The looms come in a variety of colors and the foliage can vary in color as well, from your average green to red and purple leaves, blue-green leaves, silver leaves and even variegated leaves. And they also attract butterflies, hummingbirds and bees. One sedum that is especially great this time of year is Autumn Joy Sedum or stonecrop.
All you need for a happy, healthy stonecrop is a sunny spot that has soil on the drier side. These sedums grow to be as tall as 24 inches and can make great cut and dried flowers.. They bloom late in the growing season to keep color going when other perennials are starting to wrap up their growing for the year.
Another great feature of this reliable perennial is the fact that the blooms’ color changes as the season goes on. When they first open, they are a beautiful pink and the mature to a more copper color, perfect for the autumn season.
For a beautiful flower with a unique texture and color, be sure to add a stonecrop to your garden.
Happy Planting!
