“These survey results are the driving force behind Clarendon Hills Music Academy's mission to create a whole new kind of music lesson experience.” - Derek Berg (Founder)
Parents who enroll their children in music lessons often wonder why their kids, who were initially excited about learning to play an instrument, quickly lose interest and eventually quit. The answer lies not with the kids, but with the music lessons themselves.Based on a survey we conducted, most music lessons fail to engage for four main reasons:
Reason # 1. Lessons are focused on rote memorization of notes and do not allow students to express and explore their creativity.
At Clarendon Hills Music Academy, we understand that music should be fun, passionate, and enriching. That’s why we’ve designed a music program that deviates from the norm in every way possible. Our teachers create individualized lesson plans catered to each student’s needs, expertly balancing practice and creative expression.

Reason # 2. Students are forced to play music their teachers like – not the music they love to play.
In our studios, students pick the music they play. Though our teachers work to expand their students’ musical horizons, they allow students the freedom to play the music they love. Whether that means choosing songs from students’ iPods or introducing them to old classics, our teachers want to make sure their students are passionate about the music they play.
Reason # 3. Lessons are business-like with no room for fun or spontaneity.
Just like music itself, our teachers leave room for spontaneity. While lesson plans are important, it’s even more important to listen to the needs of the student. That means that lesson plans are adaptable – if students say, “This is not what I want to do,” our teachers hear them and adjust accordingly.

Reason # 4. Music teachers are unenthusiastic, unfriendly, and ultimately more interested in the buck than inspiring their students.
You may have guessed already, but our teachers in no way resemble the crotchety old piano teacher who raps her students’ knuckles when they miss a note. Our teachers are expert musicians who love to inspire others – we choose carefully from the large pool of applicants to ensure all our teachers are friendly, charismatic, talented, and – above all – passionate about music and teaching. Our teachers’ love for music perfectly reflects our mission: to help every student of every age and skill level become a music lover for life.
