Talking to Your Kids About Race and Diversity

Union Church offers program for parents

“Why does that boy have such dark skin?”

“Why does that lady always wear a scarf?”

Questions like these can be “teachable moments,” but how should parents respond?

Psychologists note several things about the way understandings of race and diversity are passed along to children: first, white parents are very likely to avoid talking about race with their children, assuming their silence will lead to “colorblindness” and second, kids are likely to make their own, usually erroneous, conclusions about the meaning of race and diversity in the vacuum created by their parents’ silence.

On Friday, January 8, from 9:30-11:00 am, Bromleigh McCleneghan, Associate Pastor for Ministry with Families, Union Church of Hinsdale, will lead a discussion of strategies for broaching these critical topics in our diverse society (or, more likely, strategies for responding when your kids bring them up!).
