Veterans Enjoy a Day at the Ballpark

Home Helpers Thanks Veterans With Annual Cubs Game

Nearly 100 local veterans kicked off their Memorial Day weekend with a trip to Wrigley Field, courtesy of Home Helpers.

Ten area Home Helpers offices, including Hinsdale, invited veterans and their guests to watch the Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants on May 25, continuing a tradition that the Home Helpers Chicagoland Co-op began two years ago.

Along with tickets, the veterans were treated to hot dogs and snacks to make the day complete.

“It was a beautiful day,” said Deanna Conroy, a Home Helpers caregiver who escorted Richard Lyons, a U.S. Army veteran, to the game. The veterans in attendance included members of the Army, Navy and Marines who served in World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, Desert Storm and Afghanistan.

A highlight for many was the chance to meet and have their pictures taken with Cubs owner Tom Ricketts.

“We’re happy to offer this opportunity to our veterans every year,” said Mike Doepke, owner of Home Helpers of Hinsdale and a member of the Home Helpers of Chicagoland Co-op.

“These men and women gave so much of themselves for all of us. It’s an honor to give back to them in this small way,” Doepke said.
