Walker School GIVING Committee Plants Spring Bulbs

The Walker School GIVING Committee recently focused their efforts on a beautification project by planting hundreds of spring flower bulbs around the school’s grounds. The GIVING Committee (Girls and Boys Initiating Volunteerism in our Neighborhood and throughout the Globe) is an extra-curricular group that leads service-oriented activities benefiting the community; members include students, staff and families.

GIVING Committee leader and Walker parent Katie Schwarz worked with a team of parents to lead students in the planting of daffodils and crocus plants. She notes, “We started doing the ‘Big Dig’ six years ago when the new Walker facility was built and have been doing it ever since. The students love planting all the bulbs and digging in the dirt. They get so excited in the spring when all ‘their’ flowers start popping up. They take pride in their hard work and are even more careful to make sure no one steps on the flowers.”

Schwarz notes that every year, Walker alumni who are now at Clarendon Hills Middle School or Hinsdale Central High School stop to tell her that they see "their" Walker flowers. “The ‘Big Dig’ is a great way for the students to see the rewards of their giving - year after year. It's wonderful for them and also benefits Walker's neighbors, as well. It's a win-win!"
