Willowbrook Gasoline Leak: Speedway Gas Station Continues Investigation

Speedway said its investigation is ongoing as they are undertaking a complex examination of all assets and equipment​.

WILLOWBROOK, IL — Investigation continues into the gas leak that caused several explosions and fires on Friday, Oct. 20. The leak has been linked to a Speedway Gas Station, located at 6241 S. Cass Ave., in Westmont. According to DuPage County Sheriff's Office, gasoline from the station leaked into the Flagg Creek Sanitary District system as well as local storm sewers. Police said there were several reports of odor in the area, as well as 10 flashes and/or explosions and fires.

Speedway has shared an incident response page, and said the investigation is ongoing, and the company is working with local officials and responders. According to the statement, Speedway representatives have been going door-to-door across the impacted neighborhoods.

According to police, between 3:41 p.m. and 11:42 p.m. on Oct. 20, a total of seven reports were investigated. The first explosion, which caused one person to be transported to Hinsdale Hospital, took place at 9:26 a.m. in the laundry room of a Willowbrook condominium complex, located at 6167 Knollwood.

The gasoline smell was identified at Speedway at 10 a.m., and police said Flagg Creek Sanitary District stopped the gasoline from entering the sanitary sewer at 10:30 a.m. However, several reports still came in after the gasoline was stopped. At 12:19 p.m., there was a report of a house fire at 325 63rd St. in Willowbrook. At 1:16 p.m., there was another house fire reported at 356 Coralynn Court in Willowbrook.
