Canal Bike Path Improvements Approved In Lockport

The City of Lockport and the Lockport Township Park District will split the cost of the project.

LOCKPORT, IL — The Lockport City Council awarded a contract to Schroeder Asphalt Services, Inc., for the Canal Bike Path project, at its Wednesday council meeting. The contract was for $172,648.41 and will include improvements to the bike path from Second to Sixth Street.

Earlier in the meeting, the city council passed an intergovernmental agreement with the Lockport Township Park District for 50/50 cost sharing on the project, since a majority of the proposed improvements for the path are in park district jurisdiction, according to council documents.

The project will take place on a half-mile portion of path along the east bank of the I&M Canal. The project upgrades a section of the existing limestone screenings path to a hot-mix asphalt pavement and provide an 8-foot wide path, council documents state. A section of the path also has cross slopes greater than the standard 2 percent, and upgrades will follow Americans with Disabilities Act requirements to make the path even and provide better access, according to council documents.

The project also includes a portion of asphalt resurfacing near the Sloyan Pad. Since the work isn't part of the actual path, the city will solely pay for this portion, which will cost $10,000, council documents state.

Schroeder Asphalt Services was the low bidder for the project, with the total of $172,648.41. For the total cost of the project, the park district will pay $81,024.21, and the City will pay $91,024.21.
