False Gun Report At Homecoming, Lockport Students In Custody

Police said reports of a shooting at the dance are not true.

LOCKPORT, IL —Two students were taken into custody Saturday, after a report that they had brought a gun to the Lockport Homecoming dance, police said. Lockport Police Department has received calls about reports on social media stating that there was a shooting at the dance, and the department said this is not true.

Police said officers and school officials working at the dance received a report that a student may have brought a gun to the dance. The student, who is a freshman in the district, was identified and taken into custody.

Investigators then learned that at some point the student had given a pellet gun to another student, also a freshman. Police said it's not clear where this exchange returned, but the second student then hid it off of school grounds.

According to police, the second student has been identified and the pellet gun was recovered. Neither student has been reported to have threatened any students with the pellet gun, and the pellet gun was never fired. Reports of shots being fired in the school are not accurate, police said.

As with most dances, the department said officers are at the school providing extra security. This is a routine practice and is not related to any threat. Several law enforcement agencies also responded to the school due to these reports, but there was no threat to students or staff, police said.
