There was extensive damage to a rooftop HVAC unit due to nails being driven into the side of the unit.
LOCKPORT, IL — Vandalism to the Gaylord Building in Lockport could cost up to $40,000, according to the Lockport Police Department. The department is looking for information that could lead to the identification of the vandals.
Police said they received a report of vandalism in mid-March to the Gaylord Building, 200 W. Eighth St. At first, it was believed damage was limited to graffiti which was sprayed onto the side of the building and some rooftop equipment. However, once the National Trust for Historic Preservation had the damage further inspected, it was discovered that there was extensive damage to a rooftop HVAC unit due to nails being driven into the side of the unit. This caused all of the refrigerant to drain out.
According to police, the cost to repair the unit would be $20,000, while the cost to replace the unit is more than $40,000. This cost is in addition to the expense required to remove the graffiti.
