Loaded Handgun Found In Lockport Woman's Car: Cops

A Lockport woman was arrested after fleeing the scene of a residence where shots were reported, police said.

LOCKPORT, IL — A Lockport woman was arrested after police found a loaded handgun in her car. Josalyn Smith, 27, of the 17600 block of Village Lane, was arrested at 2:15 a.m. June 6 for aggravated unlawful use of weapon, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and illegal transportation of alcohol.

According to Joliet Police, officers responded to a call of shots fire in the 500 block of Macomber and while en route, they saw a black Hyundai Sonata fleeing the scene at a high rate of speed.

Police said they pulled the car over near Chicago Street and I-80, as the car approached the freeway entrance. Smith; Marcello Dilworth, 18; Darius April, 19; and a juvenile were in the car.

According to police, officers could smell a strong odor of cannabis emitting from the vehicle, and they observed open alcohol in the center console.

Police also found a high capacity magazine for a semi-automatic handgun from Smith's jacket pocket, and a loaded semi-auto handgun was found in the car, police said.

Plastic baggies used for packaging drugs and a digital scale were found in the car. Police said a large sum of cash and illegal cannabis was also found on Dilworth's person.

An investigation showed that a home in the 500 block of Macomber was struck by gunfire, according to police. No one was injured. Police have conducted a gunshot analysis on the occupants of the vehicle, and have processed the scene to determine if the weapon seized was used in the shooting.

Police said the vehicle was towed and impounded. The juvenile was charged with curfew violation and returned to her parent. Smith was booked into Will County Jail on June 6, but is no longer listed as in custody.
