Lockport Library Program Discusses Native American Culture

The program discusses the tribes who once inhabited Illinois and gives a brief history of the Trail of Tears as it pertains to those tribes.

LOCKPORT, IL — Ojibwa author Kim Sigafus McIver will host the program, "Journeying through the American Indian Way of Life," at the Lockport branch of the White Oak Library District from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 4. Sigafus McIver will talk about the tribes who once inhabited Illinois and also give a brief history of the Trail of Tears as it pertains to those tribes, according to the library.

The program will also discuss the typical day of Native Americans in the early 1800s, and discuss ongoing traditions, as well as harvest, music, courting, marriage and more, according to the library.

Sigafus McIver is an award-winning Ojibwa author from Freeport, the library said. Her family is from White Earth Reservation, in the northwest corner of Minnesota. She writes Native American fiction and non-fiction, as well as young adult and children's books.
