Lockport Mosquito Trap Tests Positive For West Nile Virus

This is the fourth sample in Will County to test positive for West Nile Virus.

LOCKPORT, IL — A sample taken from a mosquito trap in Lockport has tested postive for West Nile Virus activity. The Will County Health Department said this is the fourth sample this season that has tested positive. The other samples were taken from traps in Manhattan, Plainfield and Joliet.

The health department said West Nile Virus is passed from infected birds to humans through the bite of a Culex mosquito. During the peak mosquito hours of dusk to dawn, residents should wear long sleeves, long pants, and shoes and socks. Insect repellent containing DEET is recommended as well. Light colored clothes are best, as mosquitos are attracted to dark habitats.

According to the department, residents should also remember to remove standing water from property, such as in gutters, birdbaths, kiddie pools, and other areas that hold water and may be tempting for mosquitos to lay eggs.
