Lockport Police To Hand Out Popsicles Around Town Thursday
Police will drive through town starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, with "ice cream music" playing, as well as the siren and air horn.
LOCKPORT, IL — If you're looking for a way to cool down, the Lockport Police Department will be driving through town handing out popsicles on Thursday. According to the department Facebook page, the popsicles were donated by the Lockport Walmart.
Police will drive through town starting at 10 a.m. Thursday, with "ice cream music" playing, as well as the siren and air horn. According to the department Facebook, police will start on the north end of town and work their way south.
Officer Kevin Brauch, who is part of the community outreach unit, said the idea was "simply originated."

"It is hot out lately, and we were looking for new and different ways to reach out to the community," he told Patch.
If you hear the music and sirens, you can wait on the sidewalk and will be handed a free popsicle to cool down. The department shared on approximate schedule, which can be found below:

- 10 to 11:15 a.m. - Subdivisions and residential areas north of 159th Street (Ninth Street)
- 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. - Subdivisions and residential areas in between 159th Street and Division (167th Street)
- 12:30 to 2 p.m. - Subdivisions south of 167th (Division Street).
Brauch said the community outreach unit has a lot of ideas "for showing the citizens that we care about them and that we are there for them."
"This is just one of those ideas that seemed like one that would be fun for not only us but for the citizens as well," he said. "Our job can be intense and high risk. Our job requires us to balance the serious moments with the light-hearted moments. This is just an opportunity for us to be light-hearted and have some fun with the citizens, especially the kids."
