Lockport VFW Chooses Essay Contest Winner

LOCKPORT, IL — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Lockport Post #5788 has chosen a post winner for the Voice of Democracy contest. The post presented $100 and a certificate to Katie Zellinga for her audio essay for the Voice of Democracy competition.

According to the post, the Voice of Democracy competition is held every fall. This year's theme was, "What Makes America Great," and the contest is for students grades 9-12.

Zellinga and other post winners will go on to compete at the district level. District winners then compete at the state level, and those winners go to Washington, D.C. to compete at the national level.

The national first place winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship for an American university, college or vocational/technical school. The first place winner from each state will also win a minimum scholarship of $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C.
