Village Attorney Eric Hanson said that under Illinois law, "the municipal code provides that the newly elected officials, their terms, commence at the next meeting after the county clerk certifies the election results."
The Will County Clerk's Office certified election results on Tuesday.

"It's a change from in the past, I think in many occasions it was always that first meeting in May, because the clerk's certification didn't come in yet," Hanson said.
Earlier in the meeting, Mayor Christina Neitzke-Troike said the trustees and herself were unaware that Wednesday would be their first meeting.
"Believe it or not, it wasn't until 2 [or] 3 o'clock today that I didn't expect to be sitting here myself," she said.
Neitzke-Troike said she wants to move forward with "civility" on the Village Board, and added that "this was not a hostile takeover," and the former trustees and mayor agreed with the new officials taking their seats on Wednesday.
